The Truly Disturbing Truth About Sunscreen. Here’s How to Make Your Own Instead!

I remember as a kid having sunscreen lathered all over me, I am particularly sensitive to chemicals though and remember many of them actually BURNING my skin before I even went out in the sun, I couldn’t go near the Banana Boat brand with a 10ft pole and mum eventually found one that I wasn’t too sensitive too, though I’m sure it still would’ve had less than ideal chemicals in it.. who would’ve known though? Lather your kids in sunscreen they said, it will protect them from skin cancer and getting burnt they said, it’s completely safe even for babies 6 months and older they said.

WRONG AGAIN!!!! It kind of sucks how we keep finding out more and more of the things we’ve been told over the last 50-100 years are so far from truth and what is safe for ourselves and our kids!! But there are almost always naturally alternatives.

So why is conventional sunscreen so bad for us??

As Dr Axe explains in this post

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just published their 2014 guide to safe sunscreens. They reviewed over 2000 sunscreens and over 257 brands. They found more than 75% of the sunscreens contained toxic chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer and other health issues.

According to research from the EWG: Our review…shows that some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some have toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, some act like estrogen and disrupt hormones, and several can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. The FDA has not established rigorous safety standards for sunscreen ingredients. Sunscreens haven’t been regulated since 1978 in the USA, and the SPF factor only tells you how effective a sunscreen is against UVB rays which cause sunburn.

  • Absorb into the blood
  • Release free radicals in sunlight
  • Act like estrogen
  • Disrupt hormones
  • Cause allergic reactions
  • Cause skin irritation
  • Have no rigorous safety standards

A recent study published in Environmental Science Technology has also shown the common sunscreen ingredients oxybenzone, methoxycinnamate, and PABA are estrogenic chemicals linked to cancer. That’s right, I read the labels on not only my food products, but on anything I’m putting on or near my body, and you should too. If your sunscreen contains any of these chemicals I’d throw it away right now!

  • Para amino benzoic acid
  • Octyl salicyclate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Cinoxate
  • Dioxybenzone
  • Phenylbenzimidazole
  • Homosalate
  • Menthyl anthranilate
  • Octocrylene
  • Methoxycinnamate
  • Parabens

You NEED some sun exposure without sunscreen

But please don’t twist this, this will be different for each individual depending on skin type/tone and this is not an excuse to get burnt in the sun or lie around all day heavily tanning, however each and every day it is ideal to get as much skin exposed to the sun as possible for a short period of time and the middle of the day is actually the best time to do so!

Vitamin D is essential for health and the best way to get it is through sun exposure, when you get approximately 20 minutes of direct sunlight (for some it may only be 5-10 minutes, again depending on skin type, you will know your body best), your body naturally generates enough Vitamin D3 (Calciferol), and you body also knows the right amount to generate without overdose.

Vitamin D3 has been one of the most researched nutrients over the past 5 years and it has been shown to naturally help boost the immune system, help fight cancer and improve mood.

Why choose MINERAL sunscreen instead of conventional

Non-mineral sunscreens penetrate the skin and go into the blood stream, can disrupt hormones, cause allergic reactions, and  can release free radicals when they break down. Oxybenzone is the most common ingredient found in sunscreens. Scientists recommend not using sunscreens containing oxybenzone on children because of this hormone disruption.

Mineral sunscreens use zinc, or titanium.  These do not breakdown in sunlight, are not usually absorbed ( so do not disrupt the body’s hormones), are not allergenic and are more effective at blocking UVA rays than non-minerals.  These sunscreens are a good choice for children and according to EWG have the best safety profiles of the choices in the United States.

How to make your own

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Combine all ingredients except zinc oxide in a jar.
  2. Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water on stove over medium/low heat.
  3. Place jar in saucepan and stir contents until ingredients start to melt.
  4. Once all ingredients are combined, add in zinc oxide and stir well. Store in a cool place.

Or try these brands for a natural store bought sunscreen

These healthier sunscreens contain Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as a more natural form of sunblock. However even these ingredients aren’t flawless as you’ll see in the EWG ratings system. I only use sunscreen if I’m going to be in the sun all day, otherwise I prefer to cover up with a hat and clothes.

What you eat plays an important role

According to the American Cancer Society, oxidative damage can increase your cancer risk, this is why it is SOOOOOOO important to avoid toxic vegetable and seed oils like margarine and other spreads that are high in free radicals and cause oxidative damage as well as vegetable and seed oils like canola, cottonseed, corn, soy etc. Eat GOOD natural fats like coconut unrefined, olive oil (100% cold pressed only), avocado, animal fats from healthy grass fed animals and butter and ghee.

There are also other foods that can be used to support the skin including-

  • Resveratrol (blueberries and red grapes)
  • Omega 3 fatty acids (salmon and fish oil) (ask me about doTERRAs supplement range)
  • Astaxanthin (salmon and fish oil) please search for WILD CAUGHT not farmed
  • Catechins (green and white tea) go for Organic brands
  • Vitamin E (pumpkin seeds, almonds, and asparagus)
  • Beta-carotene (carrots and red bell peppers)

Remember to

  1. Get sun exposure on as much of your body as possible for a short period of time every day
  2. Cover up with light clothing BEFORE you get burnt
  3. Wear natural sunscreen either DIY or from the above options if you’re going to be in the sun for long periods of time
  4. AVOID oxidative stress and eating toxic fats and eat foods high in antioxidants for further skin protection
  5. If you get burnt use aloe vera, coconut oil and lavender essential oil to soothe the skin or try making this skin soothing spray. Take precautions and don’t get burnt though!!

Candy Cane Scrub

Looking for a festive and fun way to spread Christmas cheer? Try this fun candy cane scrub made with Peppermint essential oil! This scrub takes only a few ingredients and can easily be customized to your favorite colors and essential oils. It can be used as an amazing all over body exfoliant in the bath or shower.

What You Need:

3/4 cup white sugar (you can also use brown sugar or sea salt)

1/2 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil (get it here) (you could also use almond oil, grapeseed oil, or olive oil).

12 drops Peppermint essential oil

Skin safe food coloring

Glass jar to store

Directions:

1. Combine sugar and Fractionated Coconut Oil into bowl and divide equally into two bowls.

Spicy, Aromatic Sugar Scrub

There are really endless versions of this sugar scrub.

You could  try this beautiful Christmas spicy, aromatic combo of Cassia, Ginger and Clove that smells absolutely delicious and leaves skin baby soft.

What You Need:

3/4 cup white sugar (you can also use brown sugar or sea salt)

1/2 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil (you could also use almond oil, grapeseed oil, or olive oil).

4 drops Cassia essential oil

4 drops Clove essential oil

2-4 drops Ginger essential oil

Glass jar to store

Directions:

1. Combine sugar and Fractionated Coconut Oil into a bowl.
2. Add essential oils.
3.  Stir until the mixture is the consistency of a slushy. You may need to add more sugar or Fractionated Coconut Oil for desired consistency.
4.  Add to an air-tight container. You’re done! Use 1-2 times a week on hands, feet, legs, or arms. Follow with dōTERRA hand lotion for best results.

Bath Salt Ornaments

This is a super cute gift that can double up! Use as a beautiful Christmas decoration and then after Christmas treat yourself to a beautiful relaxing epsom salt and essential oil bath!

What You Need:

Round Plastic Ornaments

1 Cup Epsom Salt (you may need more or less depending on the size of your ornament)

5-10 drops of your favorite dōTERRA essential oil (try Lavender Peace/Serenity, Geranium + Lavender or Balance)

Dried herbs or flower petals (optional but looks beautiful)

Instructions:

1. Mix desired amount of Epsom salt in bowl and add some skin-safe colorant if desired.

2. Add dried herbs or flower petals to mixture for color and added aroma.

3.   Add the essential oils of your choice; mix well.

4. Add the bath salt to plastic ornaments until full.

5. Once full, put the top of the ornament back on. Quick, easy, and beautiful.

6. When ready to use, add desired amount to warm bath.

4. Make a divine sugar body scrub.

Take 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of fractionated coconut oil. Add 10 drops of Wild Orange essential oil and store in a glass jar. To use, apply a small amount to hands and scrub for 30 seconds or until sugar dissolves. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. You can try all sorts of combinations of oils for this sugar scrub, just be aware if using Citrus oils not to spend time in the sun for 12+ hours after using as it can make your skin more photosensitive, best to use at night or if you will be working indoors.

5. Try making this gorgeous DIY Lip Balm or give the premade Wild Orange and Peppermint lip balm a go, so lovely!!

6. Make your own Glass Cleaner! Chemicals in cleaning supplies can be hazardous to your health and the environment. Take the risk out of household cleaners by making your own cleaners at home. They’re affordable, easy, eco-friendly, and more effective than store-bought cleaners.

What You Need:

500ml Glass Spray Bottle

1 1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup distilled water

8 drops of any citrus oil of your choice (could use Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, or a combination)

Directions:

Add vinegar, water, and essential oil(s) to spray bottle and shake. You are ready to clean!

7. Make your own non-toxic potpouri! << Recipe

8. Make your own natural, non-toxic wood polish! Bring back the shine to your favorite tables, countertops, floors, and more with this simple recipe.

What You Need:

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup vinegar

10 drops dōTERRA essential oils (try Wild Orange, Arborvitae, or Lemon)

8 oz. (approx 200ml)  glass spray bottle

Bring back the shine to your favorite tables, countertops, floors, and more with this simple recipe for homemade wood polish with essential oils.

Directions:

1. Add olive oil and vinegar into glass spray bottle.

2. Add 10 drops of essential oil.

3. Shake well before each use. Apply to a microfiber cloth and wipe wood surfaces clean. Repeat every 2-3 months or as often as needed.

9. DIY All Purpose Spray. There is no need to pull out your rubber gloves and surgical masks when you clean your home. It might surprise you to know that you can concoct simple and inexpensive non-toxic cleaners from ingredients already lying around your house. Using essential oils to create  your own cleaning spray is not only safe on the environment,  but is safe for your family as well. This spray is perfect for cleaning hard surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom, etc.

A good all-purpose spray is a must-have! Check out this recipe for a quick and inexpensive all-purpose spray recipe using essential oils you will LOVE!

What You Need:

16 oz. (approx 500ml) glass spray bottle

1/4 cup white vinegar

1 3/4 cups water

30 drops Wild Orange essential oil (see more suggestions below)

Essential oils to try:

A combination of any of the above essential oils would work great in your homemade cleaning spray. Experiment and find what works best for you.

Some recommended combinations include:

15 drops each of Purify and Wild Orange

10 drops each of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Wild Orange

30 drops On Guard blend

15 drops each of Grapefruit and On Guard

Directions:

Add all ingredients to spray bottle. Shake thoroughly.

10. Wild Orange is a beautiful, uplifting, energising, joyful aroma, use on diffuser jewellery made of clay or lava or put a few drops in the palm of your hands, rub together and inhale deeply, enjoy!

Seven Non-Toxic Perfume/Deodorant Replacement Recipes!

Why Can’t I Wear Regular Perfume?

Sadly it’s seriously dodgy shit in most cases! Filled with chemicals that have the potential to disrupt our endocrine systems, wreaking havoc on our hormones, affect our lungs, bio-accumulate in our cells with relatively unknown long term consequences and contribute to headaches/migraines/eczema/allergies and asthma and a host of other not so pleasant symptoms, best avoided!!

The Dangers Associated With Phthalates

In fact anything with the word “fragrance” on the bottle including your shampoo, face wash, body wash, air freshener etc will generally contain a chemical called phthalates, this chemical is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen (cancer causing), and may adversely affect human reproduction or development, other human and animal studies have found links to birth defects, decreased sperm counts and damaged sperm, increased risk of developing behavioral problems, premature birth, and respiratory difficulties in children with bronchial obstruction (such as asthma). What Else are Phthalates in and What Can I Use Instead?

I wrote a blog full of recipes for replacing household and chemical cosmetics which you can read here. But here are seven non-toxic perfume replacements that I LOVE using based on 100% pure essential oils. It was such a joy for me to realise I could actually wear perfume and nice smelling deodorant again after several years of being toxin and therefore perfume free.

1. Balance- The Grounding Blend

This is one of the easiest options around, buying a premade, prediluted with a safe carrier oil, essential oil blend. This blend has a warm, woody, fresh (and divine) aroma and creates a sense of calm and well-being. It is a perfect blend of Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile with Fractionated Coconut Oil to offer an enticing fragrance that promotes tranquility and a sense of balance. Spruce, one of the oils in Balance, was used by Native Americans for medicinal and spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to the mind and body. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile can soothe sore muscles and joints, promote circulation, and relax the body, while Frankincense supports cellular health and overall well-being.

I love using this blend straight on my wrists, behind my neck and even on the soles of my feet at the beginning of the day and throughout the day, it is amazingly grounding and also really helps when I am feeling anxious. It’s a blend both men, women and children can appreciate and I apply it to my kids as well, Dom wears it before going off to school, as well as some other oils and blends, you can read about our kids routine here.

2. The Mellow Mama Blend

This blend is one you make up yourself with four essential oils and fractionated coconut oil. It’s a blend by the gorgeous Hayley Hobson. It smells absolutely divine and is also great as a deodorant, or applied to the wrists, heart chakra, behind the ears etc. I love that when I use essential oils not only do they smell amazing but they actually have profound therapeutic value and this particular blend is so uplifting as well as keeping me nice and mellow on those crazy mummy days. Gorgeous heart opening oils such as Ylang Ylang make this blend truly divine.

3. Whisper- Blend for Women

Many of the women (and men) in the Oily Tribe have a Whisper story to tell. This blend enhances the sensual goddess within. It is truly divine and has known aphrodisiac oils included in the magical recipe.

It is a complex and diverse blend that entices the senses and combines with each individual’s chemistry to create a uniquely personal fragrance. Each essential oil in the blend provides an inviting aroma of its own, but when combined, these oils offer a distinct scent that intrigues the mind and senses to both the wearer and those passing by. 4. The Unconditional Love Blend by Vanessa Jean

This gorgeous blend will make you feel sexy, vibrant and alive with the uplifting aroma of Wild Orange, known as joy bubbles in a bottle, heart opening Ylang Ylang and divine Hawaiian Sandalwood, the Oil of Sacred Devotion helps us come back to that place of spiritual alignment.  This blend was taught to me by my gorgeous friend and fellow Wellness Advocate and Leader Vanessa Jean from Food Alchemy.

I like to add two drops of each to a little bowl with 10ml of carrier oil (and sometimes a drop or two of Whisper, above) and start the day by aromatically dressing. << Click the link to watch a video tutorial.

5. The Peaceful Blend

Like Balance, this blend is absolutely amazing for children and adults alike, calming, grounding, emotionally restorative, it’s like a socially appropriate blankie for adults. I apply to my wrists, heart chakra, back of my neck and soles of my feet as needed. If I feel like using it every few months or every 5 minutes I go with that, I do apply it absolutely every day to the kids. I notice a massive difference.

6. Bloke’s Non-Toxic Cologne

There are so many awesome options to make your own blends. This blog post is full of recipes for DIY Cologne.

Dan loves Bergamot, Lime, Frankincense and Hawaiian Sandalwood, yummmmm!! We do 15 drops Bergamot, 15 Lime, 7 Frank and 7 Sandalwood in a 10ml roller, fill with fractionated coconut oil.

7. Deodorant Recipe THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!!

The amount of reject natural deodorants we have tried has been seriously way too high. I saw a post by Sarah Wilson to the same effect!!! In the end she settled for the Black Chicken Remedies paste which I’ve heard AMAZING things about so if this doesn’t work for you give that one a crack BUTTTT myself and Dan have had amazing results with this badass little recipe.

In a 10ml roller add

15 drops Purify essential oil

15 drops Clary Sage essential oil

5 drops Frankincense essential oil

5 drops Lemon essential oil

5 drops Lavender essential oil

5 drops Patchouli essential oil

Fill the remaining space with doTERRA fractionated coconut oil.

Notes from Dr Hales. Purify will aid in inhibiting bacterial growth and help the body detox. Clary Sage inhibits body odor and will help brighten your mood. Frankincense is my daily use oil, so it makes sense that I include it in something I use on a daily basis. Lavender is calming and good for the skin–I guess I like baby soft armpits. Lemons helps to purify, fight bacteria, and I like the smell. Finally Patchouli, it helps me stay focused. However, you can choose any “low tone” oil. In other words, a thicker, grounding oil. This will help the deodorant stay active longer and absorb more slowly. Some good options are Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli, or Vetiver.

Lemon Essential Oil Ideas

1. Soothe an irritated throat, layer Frankincense and Lemon over the throat area or take a drop of Lemon in a small amount of raw honey (not suitable for children under 1).

2. Diffuse lemon to neutralise odours. Got a house full of stinky boys? Lemon is your friend. You can also use a few drops on cotton wall bools and place in your fridge, in shoes, wherever you want to get rid of nasty smells.

3. Lemon, like all citrus oils, is very uplifting and also promotes positive mood and cognitive ability, a great one to diffuse at your desk. You could also add a drop or two of peppermint to keep you alert.

4. Flavour boost, our oils are beyond food grade  you could add a drop of Lemon essential oil anytime you are cooking with lemon juice (Salmon on the BBQ, Lemon meringue pie, Hummus, Avo Smash, Lemon zest etc) to give it a deeper, more rich flavour.  You could also add a drop or two to tea or a smoothie. Lemon naturally  cleanses the body and aids in digestion.

5. Add a couple drops of Lemon essential oil to your dishwater or to the rinse section of your dishwasher. Lemon is amazing at cutting through grease and grime and will live your glassware sparkling.

6. Make an All Purpose Cleaning Spray. In a glass bottle with a spray trigger add a quarter cup of Vinegar and 30 drops of your choice of essential oils, any Citrus oil like Lemon will make a great cleaner, you could also add a squirt of the cleaner concentrate, shake, spray and wipe. Clove oil is a great mould killer! One for the bathroom.

7. Remove sticky labels with lemon essential oil! Simply add a few drops of the oil to the label, wait a minute or so and it will peel right off.

8. Make your own natural wood polish using olive oil and Lemon or Wild Orange essential oil.

9. Lemon promotes a healthy respiratory function, try diffusing two drops Lemon, two drops Peppermint and two drops Lavender for a great seasonal relief blend.

10. Use lemon essential oil in a spray bottle with water to keep fruit fresh until serving. It will also add a nice zesty flavour!

Peppermint Essential Oil Ideas

doterra peppermint bliss balls1. First things first, whip up a batch of my Peppermint, Sneaky Green and Delicious Bliss Balls. SO GOOD!!!.

2. Get rid of stinky breath, take a drop of Peppermint essential oil in water and swish around your mouth and spit, if you are on the road you can also literally just put a drop in your mouth and move it around with your tongue, it is FIERCE.

3. Peppermint makes a fantastic respiratory and sinus support. You could take a drop on your thumb, put it on the roof of your mouth and inhale deeply, diffuse or even just smell it straight from the bottle.

4. Peppermint is a fantastic oil to cool you down. In summer when it’s super humid and disgusting here in Queensland I love making a spray bottle with water and a few drops of peppermint oil and spraying my face (eyes closed), back of my neck, hair, arms, legs and especially my feet.

5. Foot soak time!!! A few drops of peppermint essential oil and some epsom salts in a little foot bath, BLISS!!!

6. Diffuse Peppermint and Wild Orange to keep you alert and focused on the task at hand.

7. Try making this Whipper Peppermint Foot Lotion

What You Need:

1 teaspoon beeswax

2 tablespoons cocoa butter

4 tablespoons shea butter

1 tablespoon  virgin coconut oil

2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil

5 drops Peppermint essential oil

5 drops Melaleuca essential oil

Directions:

1. In a small glass container, combine all ingredients except essential oils. Place in saucepan with 1-1.5 inches of boiling water.

2. Stir ingredients until combined (around 5-10 minutes).
Note: Use a popsicle stick for easy cleanup. 

3. Once melted, remove from heat and let rest for 3 minutes.

4. Add essential oils and stir.

5. Let mixture come to a solid. To quicken the process, place in refrigerator.

6. Once solid, use an electric mixer to whip the lotion. Gradually come to high speed and whip for 3-4 minutes or until light and fluffy.

7. Place into container. To use, rub on heels to help soften and soothe them. For the best results, add a generous amount to feet with socks before you go to sleep.

8. Ease tension. Apply lavender and peppermint diluted to neck and forehead to ease the pressure.

9. Try making your own toothpaste! Use equal parts of bicarb soda and Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, add ten drops of peppermint, stir and store in a glass jar, minty fresh and no nasty chemicals.

10. Tummy Calmer, take a drop of peppermint oil and dilute with fractionated coconut oil and rub clockwise on your tummy.

Easy Air Respiratory Blend Ideas (Breathe if ordering from US)

1. Support seasonal respiratory discomfort and sleep easy. Use a few drops in the diffuser by the bed (I also like to add a drop or two of Oregano).

2. Make a chest, foot and back rub to support the respiratory system. Use between 1-5 drops of the blend to 10ml carrier depending on age. Keep in a roller bottle for easy application.

3. Put a drop of this blend and a drop of Wintergreen in a sink full of hot water with a towel over your head, breathe deeply.

4. Make up a nasal inhaler or take with you on cotton balls or even just breathe in straight from the bottle!

5. Feeling anxious and claustrophobic? Or like there’s no air? Use this blend, it will literally help you breathe!!

6. Diffusing is great, but when you don’t have a diffuser handy, simply add a drop of both this blend and Frankincense into the palm off your hand.  Then, make a fist with a small opening over the oils and breathe in through your fist. This simple technique does wonders!

7. Boost your brain power!! The Respiratory Blend contains Eucalyptus essential oil which is known to help stimulate mental activity and wake up your mind.  The powerfully beneficial oils of Peppermint, Lemon, and Melaleuca are all included and are perfect if you are feeling under the weather.

8. Place a few drops on a pillow for those that don’t want the oil applied to them (I’m looking at you whiney kid or skeptical other half!). They won’t even no but they will breathe easy and sleep soundly!

9. Make a tight, dank space more breathable and light by diffusing this blend.

10. Apply to your chest, back and legs before exercising to help invigorate your lungs!

On Guard Protective Blend Ideas 

1. Diffuse anytime you are concerned about what’s going around, I like to add a drop or two of Oregano and Black Pepper for extra support. Apply diluted in carrier oil to the soles of the feet and down the spine for extra immune support.

2. Add 15 drops to a cup of corn starch or baking soda. Mix, sprinkle and rake on carpet then allow it to sit for up to an hour. Then, vacuum it clean!

3. Take in capsules with olive oil or in capsule form before, during and after a plane trip to support your Immune System and ward off Environmental threats! I take with food and fat and filtered water.

4. Diffusing can work miracles, but you can also put a few drops on your car or home’s air conditioning vents to obliterate dank, stale filtered air…right from the duct!

5. Clean your bath tub!! Mix 5-6 drops with a half cup of baking soda to clean your bath tub and skip all of the harsh, bleaching chemicals.

6. Fantastic blend for dental health (it contains Clove after all!) Try swishing with a bit of water after dental work. You can also apply directly to your teeth and gums with some Coconut Oil (or add a drop to your toothpaste) to soothe irritated gums.  For a clean toothbrush, store it overnight in a small glass of water with 3-5 drops. You could also try oil pulling with a tablespoon of Virgin Coconut oil and a drop or two of this blend.

7. Make your own SAFE Hand Sanitiser without carcinogenic Triclosan. Mix 5 Tablespoons aloe vera gel, 4 Tablespoons water, 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E oil and 8-10 drops Protective Blend in a small squeeze bottle.

8. Clean your Oven! Caked on black oven gunk does not easily come off. Make a mix of bicarb, water, Protective Blend and Lemon essential oil and apply, then scrub off. All done and no nasty chemicals.on guard

9. Make your own Foaming Hand Soap.

Making your own foaming hand soap is incredibly easy to make. You probably already have all the ingredients, too! You can use any empty foaming hand soap bottle you have laying around the house or you can purchase a new one here. Mix and match your favorite essential oils to create your own custom soap. The options are endless!

What You Need:

2 tablespoons liquid castile soap (unscented)

1 tablespoon Fractionated Coconut oil

10 drops essential oils of choice

water

Directions:

Pour castile soap and Fractionated Coconut Oil into bottle.

Add essential oils.

Slowly add water into bottle making sure to leave room for the foaming pump.

Add lid, shake, and you are good to go!

When ready to use, just pump 1-2 times into hands and wash with warm water.

10. Soak cut apples in filtered water with a drop or two of the Protective Blend for an Immune Boosting snack.

Lavender Essential Oil Ideas

1. Make some playdough for the kids, try purple and add some Lavender, Orange and some Wild Orange, Green or Blue with some Balance, they will get the calming effects of the oils while they play!

2. Diffuse with a few drops of Vetiver and Marjoram to help with the transition to the land of deep sleep.

3. Give the kids a lavender foot massage in carrier oil to calm them down in the evening, pop a drop or two on their pillows.

4. Calm down after a tense day, add a cup of Epsom salts to the bath with a few drops of Lavender.

5. After a long day on your feet rub Lavender and Lemongrass diluted on your feet and legs. It will help soothe sore muscles and fully rest.

6. Soothe a sore babies bum, mix lavender and geranium in coconut oil and use at change time. You can also make your own chemical free baby wipes with cloth wipes or paper roll, coconut oil, essential oils (just a drop of each) and water.

7. The next time someone doesn’t realize the iron or pan is still hot; apply Lavender oil to the affected area to soothe skin irritation, relieve redness and ease swelling. Also works great for soothing irritated bites!

8. Homemade Aftershave. Use after shaving to soothe and soften skin and to lessen the redness and burning caused by razor burn.

9. Take The “Ouch” Out. One drop of Lavender will help relieve the pain and sensitivity of occasional sore gums, dry or chapped lips, occasional scrapes and abrasions, or after too much sun.

10. Clear The Mind and Soothe Emotions. Apply Lavender to the temples and back of neck to lessen the effects of stress and anxious feeling and to promote mental clarity.

Oregano Essential Oil Ideas

Firstly I just want to say BE CAREFUL, Oregano is a very hot/caustic oil, always heavily dilute for topical use and stay away from sensitive bits, DON’T SCRATCH YOUR NUTS or wipe at the toilet until hands are thoroughly cleaned.

1. Concerned about the sanitary conditions of a public place you or the kids have just walked on with bare feet? Your feet absorb more than you think. Follow up by applying one drop of Oregano and Thyme, diluted with  Fractionated Coconut Oil.  Happy feet.

2. Apply to warts, surround the area with Fractionated Coconut Oil and apply a drop of Oregano Oil every day for at least a week.

3. Bring the flavour of Italy into your cooking, add a drop to your big batch of Bolognese on the stove (a drop of Basil and Rosemary are also divine additions and bring so much flavour!!) Put a drop of Oregano and a drop of Basil in your veggie dip! Or, mix them both with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for a savory bread dip. So yummy.

4. Support the immune system with the power of Oregano. Layer on Guard and Oregano on the soles of the feet with Fractionated Coconut Oil and/or Diffuse with the On Guard Protective blend.

5. Oregano is also a fantastic respiratory support. Diffuse a few drops with Easy Air/Breathe at night. Apply diluted down your spine.

6. Digestive Dilemmas Abated. Oregano is a key ingredient in dōTERRA’s GX Assist, for good reason! It helps create a peaceful environment that is unfriendly to ‘the unmentionables’ that tax our digestive systems.

9. Target The Source of Unsightly Skin Woes. Anyone’s skin can have imperfections, bumps or feel irritated.  Use sparingly! Oregano is potent.  Dilute 1 drop to 2ml carrier oil for adults.

Digestzen Digestive Blend Ideas

1. Tame a tummy. I like to have a roller on hand at all times. Dilute appropriately and give yourself, child or bub a gentle clockwise massage. So fast acting.

2. I like to take a drop in water half an hour before meals to enhance digestion!

3. Get those anxious knots in your stomach? Whip out your Digestzen roller.

4. Eaten something that hasn’t agreed with you all that well.. you guessed it.. Digestzen roller.

5. Feeling quesy on a trip? Try inhaling Digestzen to calm your stomach and applying it to your wrists.

6. Over indulged?? Apply Digestzen to your stomach to help ease discomfort.

Ice Blue (called Deep Blue if ordering from US) Ideas

1. Rub diluted on muscles before and after exercise to reduce discomfort.

2. After long hours on the computer, try rubbing this blend diluted on the shoulders and neck to recover and ease muscle tension.

3. Always typing on your computer or smart phone? This blend is great for those who spend long hours typing. Just massage into the hands, fingers and wrists when needed. I like layering frankincense underneath for even more relief.

4. Massage Ice Blue diluted in carrier oil onto the growing kids’ legs before bedtime to help with occasional aches associated with growth spurts.

5. Give your other half a massage at the end of the day. This blend is fantastic for soothing tension. (Don’t do a happy ending with this one without washing your hands thoroughly first, it will burn!!)

6. This Soothing Blend contains blue tansy and Helichrysum which when used regularly, can help promote long term muscle, joint and bone health. It can also help promote and maintain normal inflammatory response in cells.

2. Nourish Your Skin. Use a drop of Frankincense with 3 drops of carrier oil or dōTERRA Spa Hand and Body Lotion for beautiful, radiant looking skin. Try the Salubelle (Immortelle from the US) for your face. It’s divine.

3. Spread The Love. Frankincense smells wonderful and uplifts the mood. Wear it as a perfume to lift your mood and feelings of alertness.

4. Overworked Hands? Rub Frankincense on your hands after a long day of gardening or working to promote a normal inflammatory response.

5. Time To Focus. Apply 1-2 drops to your temples and the back of your neck to help improve your concentration. It’s also one of the oils in the Intune Focus Blend.

6. Nails Of Steel. Dry weather can take a toll on your nails. Try applying a drop of Frankincense to strengthen weak fingernails.

7. Goodness In A Cup. Dilute a drop of Frankincense in 1 teaspoon of honey or in a small herbal tea and take daily to maintain good health. A Calming Mood Lifter. Frankincense can be applied to the bottoms of feet to relax and calm mood swings minor to major.  In fact, it has been used to calm expectant mothers during pregnancy and labor. Tea Tree (Melaleuca in the US) Ideas

1. Say Goodbye To Razor Burn! Apply after shaving to prevent any skin irritation. You can also mix Melaleuca with a bottle of fractionated coconut oil for a great facial moisturizer. Consider also mixing with Lavender or Frankincense for added benefit.

2. Add “Oomph” To Your Lotion. Help soothe your skin by placing 1 drop of Melaleuca essential oil in your moisturizer during your morning and night skin routine. You can also apply to skin blemishes and rashes as part of a daily cleansing program.

3. Refresh Your Wash. Add a couple drops of Melaleuca to laundry detergent (I like using the On Guard Laundry Detergent or Wild Soap Nuts from Green Living Australia) to get rid of any musty smells caused by poor ventilation.

4. Baby Bottom Remedy. Mix with Fractionated Coconut Oil, Lavender, and Frankincense to make a diaper paste for baby’s irritated skin.

5. Spray your mattress with water and tea tree when you change the sheets.

6. Spray your kids hats and hair with water, Tea Tree and Rosemary, pesky bugs DON’T like these oils.

7. Tea tree is great for occasional scrapes and skin irritations, next time your kid stacks it, whip this one out!

8. Great for nasty feet. Apply directly to the feet and toenails after practice each night and especially if you are also showering, swimming or exercising in public, high traffic areas.

9. Chemical-Free Cleaning. Dilute 8-10 drops with water in a spray bottle to clean around the house. It is great to use in damp places and in the bathroom!

10. Boost Your Immune Function. Diffuse Melaleuca or dilute and rub it on the bottom of your feet. Combine with On Guard for even more immune support.

Helping Kids Focus, Manage Emotions, Calm Tantrums and Go The F To Sleep!

If I’m not solving problems with titty juice and a good nap I’m whipping out essential oils like they’re Windex (My Big Fat Greek Wedding reference). Seriously, there’s an oil for that.

The testimonials I get in from parents of children with a wide and varied spectrum of needs is astounding to me and fills me with joy that I’ve been a part of making their lives that little bit easier, it’s so great having things so readily available that actually make a profound impact on ours and our kids lives. So I’ll share here our DAILY routine, others routines and specific oils may vary but this is what works for us and our kids.

DAILY ROUTINE

Every morning we aromatically dress. I do my own blend, the kids pretty much always just use Balance further diluted with some fractionated coconut oil (FCO). I love that blend because it already has FCO in it and can be used straight from the bottle whenever needed, I use it on the wrists, back of neck and soles of feet as needed throughout the day, and swipe the kids if they need grounding hehe.

I love this blend because as the name suggests it evokes a sense of tranquility and balance, lessens stress and helps with anxious feelings and nerves, promotes circulation, whole body relaxation, calm and well-being and even soothes sore muscles and joints, it is ALWAYS in my handbag and I’ve got about four spares scattered throughout the house.

Before Dom goes to school I roll the Intune Focus blend on the back of his neck. I notice a significant difference when I do this compared to when I don’t, the teacher comments that Dom will have had a good day, has been listening and able to focus and take direction and make appropriate choices and be far less disruptive in class, better able to keep his body to himself! He asks for it if I’ve forgotten which is great!!

We also use the peaceful blend and do that in a cross over his heart chakra area (middle of his chest) and rub that in as well as on the wrists and a tiny dab over his throat chakra, again big difference when we do this as opposed to not, we find him much calmer, less flying off the handle and more able to compromise and voice his needs. This is a truly magical blend of oils that do everything from grounding, emotionally stabling, opening the heart chakra, helping shift limiting beliefs, relax, nourish the central nervous system, assist with sleep and more.. it is amazing.  We have found that using morning, in the day and needed and at night before bed EVERY day the benefits increase over time as opposed to only whipping it out when we are already in the middle of a tantrum, although that can be seriously helpful as well.

ESSENTIAL OILS AND EMOTIONS

Essential oils assist and support the body on both the physical, emotional and energetic levels. They assist in healing the heart, releasing limiting belief systems, increasing spiritual awareness and connection and inspiring the fulfillment of our life’s purpose.

It is important to note that some people can notice what appears to be regression when they first start to work with the oils on an emotional level, it is important to understand that it is a process and that when we start working with the oils trapped negative emotions must be released before we can receive the more positive feelings.

As noted in Daniel McDonald’s book Emotions & Essential Oils “The old must go to make space for the new. We often want to skip this step, but it is a necessary one. We must be willing to experience the cleansing if we truly desire healing. Resisting the cleansing process makes healing more painful. We mus surrender to the experience so that we may continue on the path of healing. The more we let go and trust, the more enjoyable this healing process can be.”

So if you are finding you don’t have INSTANT success it may be worth persevering for a while, as well as of course trying different oils and blends as there isn’t one perfect oil or blend for all, as always different things resonate and work for different people and children.

FOOD

Also food makes a SIGNIFICANT difference to the way both Dom and I cope with life, if we have lots of colours, flavours, numbers or too much commercial wheat based products and dairy we are FERAL with a capital FUCK. So our family choose to eat as well as possible, we don’t miss out on carbs as we love white rice, sourdough and plenty of potato and sweet potato at our place but we do make a conscious choice to eat nourishing, quality foods, simple stuff like vegetables, quality meat, fruit etc. I’m certainly no saint but when I eat shit I FEEL shit. It’s not good.

DAY TIME ACTIVITIES

If your kids are driving you a bit bonkers in the day time why not give some of these recipes a go!  It will keep them occupied and chilled at the same time. Really great for kids that need that sensory stimulation as well.

So just to recap for my son Dom his must haves daily are the Intune Focus Blend, the Peaceful Blend and Balance, and it is the same for me, Ned who is 16 months has Balance during the day and is good to go but he is the WORST GODDAMN SLEEPER EVER so following is our night routine which helps significantly.

WINTER SUPPORT

Coming into Winter you wouldn’t see me without bone broth soup and essential oils. I personally take the doTERRA Lifelong Vitality Supplements Daily and always have the On Guard Softgels on hand, especially if I’m flying I take the day before, day of and day after the flight for extra immune support.

I wouldn’t recommend this for kids though so we diffuse On Guard, Oregano and Black Pepper during the day in the house to ward off environmental threats and support the immune system and at night we use the Easy Air/Breathe blend in the diffuser in their rooms to support respiratory function and clear sinuses. We also use it like a petrochemical free chest/back/foot rub diluted in FCO and use the On Guard on the soles of the feet diluted as well.

WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT THEM!!! It’s normal to get run down every now and then, it’s also how little immune systems develop but since we have been using the oils it is few and far between and we bounce back heaps faster.

Oh and if your kids get sore ears a lot try Tea Tree or Basil diluted and applied behind the ear on the mastoid bone (never in) it works a treat, consider eliminating dairy (a big trigger) with the support of a health care professional.

We also diffuser lavender, lemon and peppermint together and I take the Triease softgels to protect against seasonal and environmental elements (it helps me to stop sneezing 400 times a day!!).

NIGHT ROUTINE

Bare with me.. some people just whack Lavender Peace/Serenity in the diffuser and do a bit of a foot massage with one drop of the blend diluted in a carrier oil such as doTERRA’s FCO and they are good to go, that’s all they need, this works for Dom, but not so much for my youngest or for me.

For Ned we diffuse a drop of Lavender Peace, with two drops of Cedarwood and Vetiver. I then give him a Cedarwood, Vetiver and Lavender foot massage (1 drop of each in a tablespoon of carrier oil) and then give him baby reiki where I hold his big twos gently with my thumb underneath the toe and forefinger on top and work my way along spending about a minute on each toe until I get to the pinky, this is after bath and boob when he is already fairly chilled, then I move my hand up near his face so he can breathe in the oil and back away slowly. I do the same or similar for me. STOP Cleaning Your Home & Body at the EXPENSE of Your Health!

The other day I read a fascinating (disturbing) blog post that depicted FRAGRANCE as the new second hand smoke. You can read it in full here. Below is an excerpt followed by some toxin free, super simple, gorgeous recipes using 100% pure essential oils and easy to source, non toxic ingredients.

“Trying to link the past with the present fragrance industry unfortunately reveals a radical disconnect and departure from the original therapeutic purpose and use of pure essential oils. Today’s synthetic fragrances are a far cry from the healing balms treasured so much by the ancient world that some were worth more than gold.   Instead of being medicinal, today’s fragranced products are associated with diabetes, obesity, autism, ADD/ADHD and hormone disruption.. Sadly not only the one wearing the fragrance is affected, but also the indoor air quality and those sharing the space are impacted. From pure to perverse, it is twisted irony that the word  fragrance has now gained infamy as the new secondhand smoke when theetymology of the word perfume comes from the Latin phrase, “per” meaning “through” and “fumus” meaning “smoke”.

The emerging awareness of this very “volatile” situation reveals problems much more pervasive and dangerous than tobacco smoke. Most everyone washes their clothes in detergents and fabric softeners containing fragrances that release toxic chemicals on the skin and into the air all day long.  At night they sleep in pajamas and on sheets washed in the same.  Because of this, people are awash in fragrances twenty four hours a day. When people go to a public place, they are sharing what is now being called “secondhand fragrance”. This is the combination of chemicals being released into the public air space from air fresheners, cleaning products, and scented candles plus all the products people are wearing (from hair spray, shampoo, clothes, to perfume, etc). Everyone is involuntarily breathing contaminated air even if they choose to not wear fragranced products. It’s time to clear the air and prioritize human health, not economic interest. Already lines are being drawn between two fiercely opposing camps – the National Perfumers Guild and Fragrance Houses versus the “Anti-Fragrance Activists.”

What could be wrong with a beautiful fragrance? Nothing, if it is a genuine and authentic plant derived, organic or wildcrafted unadulterated essential oil or an organic flavor/scent oil. These oils have been used throughout history, but since  World War II, with the advent and ease of production of inexpensive synthetic chemicals to create fragrances, a new era has dawned.

Today the word fragrance is the elephant in the room. Fragrance or parfum on an ingredient list actually represents a trade secret fragrance recipe that could be made up of not just one or two chemicals, but hundreds of synthetic chemicals selected from a reservoir of 5,000 that do not have to be disclosed or tested for safety.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) study, 72% of products with the ingredient “fragrance” contained endocrine disruptors called phthalates. Phthalates have been linked to diabetes, obesity, liver and breast cancer, hormone disruption affecting fertility and development as well as linked to ADHD and Autism in first and third trimester prenatal exposure. The National Academy of Sciences, working with an expert panel, stated that there may be cancer-causing chemicals in fragrance recipes, but there is no way for the consumer to make informed decisions. Up to 95% of these chemicals are derived from petrochemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, nervous system disorders, asthma, and allergies. To make matters even worse for the unsuspecting public, many products labeled as “unscented” are actually the fragranced product with the addition of another masking fragrance.  The use of synthetic chemicals to mimic natural fragrances has become an insidious underminer of health, but they are not the only subversive in the fragrance industry.

Unfortunately the term “natural fragrance” or “essential oil” on an ingredient list doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe. In a study analyzing 25 top selling products, green, natural and organic fragranced products emitted just as many hazardous chemicals as regular fragranced products. That’s because most essential oils in consumer products are processed with a toxic solvent. In addition, essential oils containing terpenes such as pine and citrus oils react with ozone in surrounding air to create secondary pollutants such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and ultrafine particles.” Full article available here.

Even the National Eczema Association of America recognises the following as problematic.. as well as many other things in our environment.

  • Soaps and detergents,
  • Shampoos, dish-washing liquids
  • Bubble Bath
  • Disinfectants like chlorine

Following are my favourite recipes that I use and love in my own home. I was diagnosed with chronic asthma at the age of three and spent a lot of my childhood in hospital, I was on the HIGHEST dose preventatives possible until just a few years ago and was told I would need to be medicated for the rest of my life. Interestingly since I started eating well and completely eliminating toxic chemicals from my home and personal care regime I no longer have ANY symptoms and am completely unmedicated. Of course I carry medications in case I have an attack as asthma is life threatening and I worked with my doctor to bring the medication down slowly but it’s pretty amazing being free of medication. Oh I also don’t sneeze 250 times before I’ve even had breakfast or have dry, scaly hands and skin.

I also have a Himalayan salt lamp by my bed and use Breathe/Easy Air essential oil blend in my diffuser with a drop or two of Cardamom essential oil to support respiratory function too, I also find it good as a rub in coconut oil on my chest and even inhaling straight from the bottle.

Let’s start with personal care. You’ve got no chance of me rolling some store bought crap under my armpits, especially with the family history of breast cancer. I make a blend of essential oils in doTERRA fractionated coconut oil, it smells divine and works all day, with no issues of toxicity, synthetic fragrance, aluminium etc..

DEODORANT RECIPE

My deodorant might look like piss in a roller bottle but I am telling you it smells divine, people comment how great I smell ALL the time. I got the roller bottle from the doTERRA convention and I’ve never seen one that size since but even just a 10ml roller will do fine.

If using a 10ml roller I use 25 drops of Citrus Bliss and 10 drops each of Ylang Ylang, Hawaiian Sandalwood and Patchouli, fill remaining space with doTERRA fractionated coconut oil, when you run out simply wash with warm/hot water and a little lavender oil and dry fully and then REUSE! No waste, no chemicals.. you can also try lots of different combos, for men try Hawaiian Sandalwood, Frankincense and Arborvitae or even just Arborvitae if you are doing physical exercise or you’re a bit more stinky, again just dilute with fractionated coconut oil and roll on!!!

PERFUME

I use the doTERRA Whisper blend or Balance blend, they are both already prediluted and smell freaking AMAZING so I just apply as is to my wrists, behind my ears, on my heart chakra and/or on my aromatherapy necklace. I often make up my own blend of single oils as a perfume in carrier oil too and do what Vanessa Jean from Food Alchemy taught me as Aromatic Dressing, check out the video here. The benefit of using these blends is not only that I’m not drowning myself in an array of chemicals that make me ill but I am actually supporting myself physically and emotionally whilst smelling like a goddess.

SKIN CARE

I have had horrible acne since I was about 16 and it’s only in the last 12 months my skin has really started to clear up with decent nutrition, balancing my hormones using Clary Calm/Solace on my wrists and abdomen each day, using Probiotics AND finally finding products that don’t strip my skin and make the situation even worse.. I also use Zendocrine, GX Assist  and the Lifelong Vitality Supplements, because what’s within will evidently reflect on the outside..oh I have also noticed a HUGE difference in my skin when I drink dodgy tap water as opposed to filtered water from my Zazen water filter.

In terms of skin care I use the HD Clear Roll on which is seriously AMAZING!!! I had a huge blind pimple come through on my chin the other days, which is now frankly a fairly irregular occurence, but I rolled this baby on (just pure essential oils) and by morning it had completely come to the surface and I could pop the bastard and then I used Immortelle/Salubelle which I use every morning and night to help with my acne scarring, pigmentation and just to create an even skin tone, hot tip I like to decant half into an empty 10ml roller bottle and fill the remaining space of both with Jojoba oil to make it go further.

BATHROOM PRODUCTS

I use the doTERRA Shampoo & Conditioner, On Guard toothpaste, Serenity soap or Citrus Bliss soap the divine Wild Orange and Peppermint Lip Balm and on the rare occasion I wear makeup I get it from Shop Naturally.

Here are some great alternative recipes to nasty chemical bath cleaner and toilet cleaner.

WASHING MACHINE

I like to use Wild Soap Nuts which I get from Green Living Australia along with wash nets and rubber bands, four of five of the nuts in a wash bag will last me 4 or 5 washes and then I just chuck them in the yard to decompose. I also add a drop or two of the Purify blend, or just straight Tea Tree/Melaleuca or On Guard to my wash which will help protect against environmental threats, smells amazing and supports immune function. Or the super simple option is to use the doTERRA On Guard Laundry Liquid.

DISHWASHER

I use the Eco Store dishwashing tablets with a drop or two of Lemon essential oil in the rinse section. This will really help cut the grease and grime and leave everything sparkly and clean without the shitstorm of chemicals.

ALL PURPOSE CLEANING SPRAY

I fill a 500ml Glass Spray bottle with water

1/4 cup white vinegar

A squirt of Natural Dishwashing Liquid like this one

And then around 20 drops of essential oil, I like to use mostly Citrus Oils to cut through grease such as Lemon, Lime, Wild Orange, Grapefruit, Bergamot etc as well as Clove essential oil if cleaning areas like the bathroom prone to mould. I use this spray to clean most surfaces such as benches, shower wall, glass, windows etc.

Sneaky Green & DELICIOUS Peppermint Bliss Balls

I love these bliss balls, I often make them for an easy snack when I am running workshops/classes and events to break up the morning and keep us all energised and engaged. My kids LOOVVVEEE them too and importantly they are nutritious and delicious.

Ingredients:

1 cup raw macadamia nuts

10 medjool dates- seeds removed

2/3 cup desiccated coconut

2 tablespoons raw cacao

1 scoop doTERRA TerraGreens Powder (order here)

Pinch Celtic sea salt

Dash organic, pure vanilla essence

5 drops doTERRA peppermint essential oil (order here)

Method:

In a thermomix or high power blender, blend the macadamia nuts on high (speed 9, for 20 seconds if using Thermomix).

Add all other ingredients and blend speed 9, 20 seconds. Roll into balls into desiccated coconut. Refrigerate and enjoy!

Wild Orange Jaffa Slice

This is another one of those bad boys that will have you invited everywhere in the hopes you bring it. Similar to my famous potato salad.

This recipe was inspired by the original Wholefood Simply recipe.

Ingredients:

1 cup desicatted coconut

10 medjool dates, seeds removed

1/4 cup raw macadamia nut butter, I make my own by blending the macadamia nuts in Thermomix speed 9 for 20 seconds

4 tablespoon cacao or cocoa

15 drops doTERRA Wild Orange Essential Oil.

OPTIONAL you can also experiment by adding a drop or two of Cassia, Cardamom or Cinnamon Bark essential oil.

1/2 teaspoon concentrated natural vanilla extract/vanilla bean paste

pinch of natural sea salt

Place the ingredients into your blender or food processor and blend until smooth and well combined. Press the mixture firmly into a loaf tin lined with baking paper over hanging the sides. Place in the fridge for several hours or overnight to set. Cut, eat and enjoy.

Jessie’s Famous, Outrageous, Delicious Potato Salad

Be careful. You can literally never attend any kind of party, function, celebration again without bringing it. In fact you may be invited to things purely in the hopes you bring this salad.

Here is the original recipe I used as inspiration.

Make sure you make double and triple quantities and get some before the vultures.

This is a Thermomix recipe.. sorry I don’t know how to make shit without one.. guess you’ll have to google it 😀

First up make the salad then the mayo to mix through. Note you want the egg to be ROOM TEMPERATURE so get it out of the fridge a few hours in advance at least.

Ingredients:

Salad-

  • 1000 g (1kg) red skinned potatoes
  • 150 g diced bacon (organic- pasture raised)
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • 20 g macadamia oil or butter
  • 60 g parmesan, shaved (shave it yourself with a peeler or sharp knife to avoid all the nasty shit in the store bought stuff)
  • 6 eggs (organic/local/backyard- pasture raised)
  • 500 g filtered water

Dressing

  • 1 egg, separated and ROOM TEMPERATURE
  • pinch of sea salt
  • doTERRA black pepper essential oil or ground black pepper
  • teaspoon organic mustard
  • tablespoon apple cider vinegar or fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 250g macadamia oil
  • drizzle organic balsamic vinegar
  1. Add bacon, oil or butter and spring onion to Thermomix bowl and cook 100 degrees, speed 1 for 3 minutes (or fry up in frying pan low-medium heat until crisp if preferred). Transfer to salad serving dish. No need to wash bowl.
  2. Add 500 g filtered water to bowl and place chopped (halves or quarters) potatoes- peeled or unpeeled into the Varoma (no tray). Steam for 15 minutes, Varoma temp, speed 2.
  3. Without burning the living shit out of yourself take the Varoma off and insert the basket into the Thermomix bowl with the 6 whole eggs in their shells. Replace lid and Varoma with potatoes still inside and steam for a further 14 minutes, Varoma temp, speed 2. Check potatoes are cooked. A knife should pass through easily but not mash them. Leave potatoes in Varoma on bench with Varoma lid underneath to catch the drips so they can cool.
  4. Remove basket with your spatula. Put eggs into a sink or bowl of cold water to cool down as you peel them. Quarter and slice eggs. Empty steaming water from bowl and dry.

Now for the mayo.

  1. Insert butterfly. Add egg yolk, pinch of salt, 2 drops black pepper essential oil, teaspoon mustard and tablespoon lemon juice or ACV and mix 20 sec/speed 4.
  2. With blades rotating on speed 4 and MC in place, gradually pour oil onto MC and allow to trickle through into mixing bowl to emulsify. Add oil at a steady pace, slowly to start with and then faster as the mayonnaise starts to emulsify. This process should take between 2-3 minutes. Drizzle a bit of balsamic vinegar in with it once the oil is all in.
  3. Chuck potatoes into your salad bowl (on top of bacon & onion mixture). Jam the eggs and shaved parmesan (keep a little for garnish) on top. Pour dressing from bowl over the salad and mix that shit well.
  4. Top with some spare spring onion or fresh chives and some of the shaved parmesan. This step is important. Gotta make that shit look fancy. Refridgerate until cool and serve.

You deserve top spot on Masterchef/MKR. Gloat over your brilliance.
